What is Panchang?+

Panchang(literally "five limbs") is the traditional Hindu calendar and almanac. It consists of five elements: Tithi (lunar day), Nakshatra (lunar mansion), Yoga (luni-solar combination), Karana (half of tithi), and Vara (weekday). It is used daily to determine auspicious timings for rituals, ceremonies, and important activities.

The Tithiis calculated from the angular distance between the Sun and Moon. Each 12 degrees of separation equals one tithi, giving 30 tithis in a lunar month — 15 in the waxing phase (Shukla Paksha) and 15 in the waning phase (Krishna Paksha).

Checking the daily panchang is an integral part of Hindu tradition. It helps in selecting muhurtas (auspicious moments) for starting new ventures, performing puja, fasting on specific tithis like Ekadashi, and understanding the planetary influences of the day.

Mangaluru (Mangalore), Karnataka's coastal city. Kudroli Shri Gokarnanatheshwara Temple and Kateel Durgaparameshwari Temple are the region's premier sacred sites. Yakshagana (traditional dance-drama), Navroz (Parsi New Year celebrated by the local Goud Saraswat community), and Dasara are major events. Mangaluru's Tulu Brahmin community has preserved classical Vedic astrological traditions for centuries.

Mangaluru's solar year — sunrise, sunset and day length

In Mangaluru the longest day runs 12h 45m (June) and the shortest 11h 15m (December) — a seasonal swing of 1h 30m. Solar noon falls +31m from the 12:00 clock hour because Mangaluru sits at 74.86°E rather than on the 82.5°E IST meridian. Every Tithi, Nakshatra and Rahu Kaal window on this page is derived from that sunrise, not from a national average.

Five Elements of Mangaluru Panchang

The traditional Panchang (पंचांग, meaning “five limbs”) comprises five essential elements that determine auspiciousness for any activity in Mangaluru:

Nakshatra (नक्षत्र)

Yoga (योग)

Combination of Sun and Moon longitudes. 27 Yogas from Vishkambha to Vaidhriti.

Karana (करण)

Half-Tithi — there are 11 Karanas, cycling through 60 Karanas in a lunar month.

Vara (वार)

Day of the week, each ruled by a planet (Sun=Sunday through Saturn=Saturday).

Mangaluru Festivals & Panchang

Mangaluru's major festivals — Dasara, Navratri, Bidar Udyambhara— are calculated using the Hindu lunisolar calendar. Festival dates change each year because the lunar calendar drifts against the solar calendar. The Panchang above shows today's Tithi and Nakshatra. Frequently Asked Questions

How is today's Panchang calculated for Mangaluru?

The Panchang for Mangaluru is calculated using Swiss Ephemeris with Mangaluru's exact coordinates (Karnataka, latitude/longitude). Sunrise in Mangaluru ranges from 6:08–7:00 AM seasonally, which affects the start of each Tithi. The Panchang shows today's Tithi, Nakshatra, Yoga, Karana, and planetary positions — all calibrated to Mangaluru's local time.

Can nearby towns like Ullal use Mangaluru's Panchang timings?

Almost, with a small shift. Ullal lies 12 km south of Mangaluru and sees sunrise −1m to 0m against it, so the sunrise row of this Panchang moves by that much there. Across the recorded places within 150 km of Mangaluru that shift stays between −4m and +2m through the year — the nearby-place table above lists each one. For a town whose shift runs past a few minutes, compute with its own coordinates instead of copying Mangaluru's slot.

Why are Mangaluru's Panchang timings different from other cities?

Panchang timings vary because they are based on actual astronomical observations for a specific location. Mangaluru's sunrise (6:08–7:00 AM), longitude, and latitude determine the precise start and end times of Tithis, Nakshatras, and Yogas. A Mangaluru Panchang uses the city's actual coordinates rather than a single standard Indian time.

When is Dasara in Mangaluru in 2025–2026?

Dasara dates are determined by the Hindu lunisolar calendar and are the same across India, though local observance customs vary. The Panchang above shows today's Tithi and Nakshatra, which you can use to track approaching festivals. For annual festival calendars, the Ishvaram Jyotish app provides complete Indian festival almanacs with Mangaluru-specific timing where relevant.
