What is Panchang?+
Panchang(literally "five limbs") is the traditional Hindu calendar and almanac. It consists of five elements: Tithi (lunar day), Nakshatra (lunar mansion), Yoga (luni-solar combination), Karana (half of tithi), and Vara (weekday). It is used daily to determine auspicious timings for rituals, ceremonies, and important activities.
The Tithiis calculated from the angular distance between the Sun and Moon. Each 12 degrees of separation equals one tithi, giving 30 tithis in a lunar month — 15 in the waxing phase (Shukla Paksha) and 15 in the waning phase (Krishna Paksha).
Checking the daily panchang is an integral part of Hindu tradition. It helps in selecting muhurtas (auspicious moments) for starting new ventures, performing puja, fasting on specific tithis like Ekadashi, and understanding the planetary influences of the day.

Margao, also called Madgaon, is the commercial capital of South Goa and a historic Gowda Saraswat Brahmin heartland. The Damodar Sal in the Saal locality and Hari Mandir are in-city Hindu shrines, while the celebrated Shri Damodar temple originally stood in Madgaon but was relocated to Zambaulim 22 km away during the Portuguese inquisition of the 1560s, where devotees from Margao still attend its Shigmo Gulal festival. Ganesh Chaturthi, locally Chavath, is the foremost Hindu celebration, observed for ten days across GSB households. Shigmo processions also pass through Margao's streets. Panchang, choghadiya, and rahu kaal timings are computed for Margao's exact coordinates.

Five Elements of Margao Panchang
The traditional Panchang (पंचांग, meaning “five limbs”) comprises five essential elements that determine auspiciousness for any activity in Margao:
Tithi (तिथि)
Lunar day — the angular relationship between Sun and Moon. 30 Tithis per lunar month.
Nakshatra (नक्षत्र)
Lunar mansion — the constellation the Moon occupies. 27 Nakshatras in the lunar zodiac.
Yoga (योग)
Combination of Sun and Moon longitudes. 27 Yogas from Vishkambha to Vaidhriti.
Karana (करण)
Half-Tithi — there are 11 Karanas, cycling through 60 Karanas in a lunar month.
Vara (वार)
Day of the week, each ruled by a planet (Sun=Sunday through Saturn=Saturday).
Margao Festivals & Panchang
Margao's major festivals — Ganesh Chaturthi (Chavath), Shigmo, Damodar Gulal at Zambaulim— are calculated using the Hindu lunisolar calendar. Festival dates change each year because the lunar calendar drifts against the solar calendar. The Panchang above shows today's Tithi and Nakshatra. Frequently Asked Questions
How is today's Panchang calculated for Margao?
The Panchang for Margao is calculated using Swiss Ephemeris with Margao's exact coordinates (Goa, latitude/longitude). Sunrise in Margao ranges from 6:09 AM–6:59 AM seasonally, which affects the start of each Tithi. The Panchang shows today's Tithi, Nakshatra, Yoga, Karana, and planetary positions — all calibrated to Margao's local time.
What is today's auspicious Muhurat in Margao?
Auspicious muhurtas in Margao depend on today's Tithi, Nakshatra, and Choghadiya periods. The Panchang above shows planetary positions and the current Tithi. For specific muhurtas (Vivah, Griha Pravesh, Vyapar, etc.), combine the Panchang data with the Choghadiya calculator — both are available for Margao on this site.
Why are Margao's Panchang timings different from other cities?
Panchang timings vary because they are based on actual astronomical observations for a specific location. Margao's sunrise (6:09 AM–6:59 AM), longitude, and latitude determine the precise start and end times of Tithis, Nakshatras, and Yogas. A Margao Panchang uses the city's actual coordinates rather than a single standard Indian time.
When is Ganesh Chaturthi (Chavath) in Margao in 2025–2026?
Ganesh Chaturthi (Chavath) dates are determined by the Hindu lunisolar calendar and are the same across India, though local observance customs vary. The Panchang above shows today's Tithi and Nakshatra, which you can use to track approaching festivals. For annual festival calendars, the Ishvaram Jyotish app provides complete Indian festival almanacs with Margao-specific timing where relevant.
