Surgery Muhurat is the auspicious timing selected for planned (elective) medical procedures. Vedic tradition acknowledges that not all health decisions can be timed — emergencies demand immediate action regardless of the Panchang. However, for procedures that can be scheduled weeks in advance — orthopedic surgeries, cosmetic procedures, planned cesarean deliveries, dental procedures, and other elective operations — families sometimes choose a muhurat.
The primary Nakshatra for surgery muhurat is Ashwini, ruled by the Ashwini Kumars — the twin divine physicians of Vedic mythology. They are described in the Rigveda as healers who could restore youth, sight, and limbs. Ashwini Nakshatra (the first star cluster of the zodiac, representing a horse's head) is considered the 'star of healing' and the most favorable Nakshatra for any medical intervention. Pushya (8th Nakshatra, ruled by Saturn, associated with nourishment and recovery) is the second most powerful Nakshatra for surgery muhurat.
The weekday choice for surgery also matters in Vedic tradition. Tuesday (Mangalvar), ruled by Mars, is the most commonly avoided day for surgery. Mars governs blood, sharp instruments, and wounds — and on an inauspicious Tuesday, these qualities are believed to be heightened. This list leaves Tuesdays out. Wednesday (Mercury, ruling the nervous system and intellectual precision) and Thursday (Jupiter, ruling healing and expansion) are generally considered the most favorable weekdays for surgical procedures.

Can muhurat delay an important surgery?
Absolutely not. No astrological consideration should ever delay a medically necessary surgery. Surgery muhurat applies ONLY to elective procedures that can be scheduled in advance without medical risk — cosmetic procedures, joint replacements scheduled months ahead, planned cesareans, and similar. Emergency surgeries, cancer treatments on medical timelines, and any procedure where delay risks health should proceed immediately regardless of the Panchang.
Which Nakshatra is best for surgery?
Ashwini Nakshatra is considered the premier Nakshatra for surgery, as it is ruled by the Ashwini Kumars — the divine physicians of Vedic tradition. Pushya (nourishing, associated with recovery) and Hasta (skilled hands) are also highly favorable. Some traditions also use Ashlesha for precision procedures; this list does not. Among all medical Nakshatras, Ashwini + Wednesday or Thursday is considered the ideal combination for planned surgical procedures.
Is there a muhurat for dental procedures?
Yes, the same surgery muhurat principles apply to dental procedures. Ashwini and Hasta are the most favorable Nakshatras for dental work. Avoid Tuesday for tooth extractions if possible, as Mars (ruler of blood and cuts) governs that day.
