In Vedic tradition, marriage is not merely a social contract but a sacred bond performed before Agni (fire) as witness. The timing of this ceremony is considered as important as the ritual itself — a well-chosen muhurat is believed to lay the foundation for a harmonious and prosperous married life.
The selection of a marriage muhurat involves multiple layers of astrological analysis. First, the horoscopes of the bride and groom are matched through Ashtakoot (eight-fold) compatibility scoring, also known as Kundli Milan or Gun Milan. This evaluates factors like Varna (temperament), Vashya (mutual attraction), Tara (birth star compatibility), Yoni (nature), Graha Maitri (planetary friendship), Gana (temperament group), Bhakoot (health and wealth), and Nadi (physiological compatibility). A minimum score of 18 out of 36 is traditionally required.
Beyond horoscope matching, the wedding date itself must satisfy multiple conditions from the Panchang. The Yoga and Karana should also be favorable.
Several periods are avoided for weddings, and this list leaves them out: Chaturmas (the four months when Lord Vishnu is believed to be in cosmic sleep, roughly mid-July to mid-November), Kharmas, Adhik Maas (the intercalary month), Holashtak (the eight days before Holi), and any day on which Venus (Shukra) or Jupiter (Guru) is combust, that is, too close to the Sun. Practice varies: some communities hold weddings during parts of Chaturmas, so a family pandit may allow dates this list does not show.
Modern families often face the challenge of balancing traditional muhurat requirements with practical considerations like venue availability and family schedules. In such cases, the Abhijit Muhurat (the universally auspicious midday window) and Akshaya Tritiya (when any time is considered auspicious) offer flexibility.
