Griha Pravesh (गृह प्रवेश मुहूर्त) is the Vedic housewarming ceremony performed when entering a new home for the first time. The term literally means "entering the house". The ceremony typically involves a Ganesh Puja, Vastu Puja, Havan (fire ritual), and the boiling of milk as the first act in the new kitchen — symbolizing abundance and nourishment.
The selection of a Griha Pravesh muhurat is a detailed process that considers multiple astrological factors. Many families prefer the Uttarayan period — the six months when the Sun travels northward (roughly Makar Sankranti in January to Kark Sankranti in July) — as it represents growth, light, and upward movement. Panchang authorities differ on Dakshinayana (the Sun’s southward journey): some allow Griha Pravesh in Kartik and Margashirsha (November–December). This list does not leave out Dakshinayana, so ask your pandit which practice your family follows.
There are three types of Griha Pravesh, each with slightly different muhurat requirements. Apoorva Griha Pravesh is for entering a newly constructed house for the very first time. Sapoorva Griha Pravesh applies when re-entering a house after renovation or reconstruction. Dwandwa Griha Pravesh is performed when returning to a house after a prolonged absence due to travel, calamity, or other reasons. The Apoorva type requires the most stringent muhurat conditions, while the others allow slightly more flexibility.

It uses the gentle (Mridu) and fixed (Sthira) Nakshatras; the fixed ones — Rohini, Uttara Phalguni, Uttara Ashadha and Uttara Bhadrapada — signify stability. The Yoga should be auspicious, and Vishti (Bhadra) Karana is cut out of every window.
From the homeowner’s horoscope perspective, the 4th house (house of property and comfort) and its lord should be well-placed and unafflicted on the chosen date. Jupiter’s transit is also significant — ideally, Jupiter should be transiting a Kendra or Trikona from the natal Moon. The Lagna at the time of entering the house should be a fixed sign (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, or Aquarius) for stability, with benefic planets in Kendras. Many families also keep the actual entry outside Rahu Kaal, Yamagandam and Gulika Kaal; the windows on this page are not cut for those periods, so check them for the day.

Traditionally, Dakshinayana is avoided for Griha Pravesh as it represents the Sun's southward journey, associated with darkness and contraction. The months of Kartik and Margashirsha (November–December) are sometimes considered acceptable. Consult your pandit for guidance.
What rituals are performed during Griha Pravesh?

Is Griha Pravesh necessary for rented houses?
While Griha Pravesh is traditionally associated with newly built or purchased homes (Apoorva type), many families perform a simplified version when moving into any new residence, including rentals. This ensures positive energy in the new living space. The muhurat requirements are less stringent for this type compared to Apoorva Griha Pravesh.
What if we missed the muhurat and already moved in?
If you have already moved in without a formal Griha Pravesh ceremony, you can perform a Shanti Puja or a simplified Griha Pravesh at a later auspicious date. While the ideal is to perform the ceremony before first entry, Vedic tradition provides remedial options for such situations.
