What is Panchang?+

Panchang(literally "five limbs") is the traditional Hindu calendar and almanac. It consists of five elements: Tithi (lunar day), Nakshatra (lunar mansion), Yoga (luni-solar combination), Karana (half of tithi), and Vara (weekday). It is used daily to determine auspicious timings for rituals, ceremonies, and important activities.

The Tithiis calculated from the angular distance between the Sun and Moon. Each 12 degrees of separation equals one tithi, giving 30 tithis in a lunar month — 15 in the waxing phase (Shukla Paksha) and 15 in the waning phase (Krishna Paksha).

Checking the daily panchang is an integral part of Hindu tradition. It helps in selecting muhurtas (auspicious moments) for starting new ventures, performing puja, fasting on specific tithis like Ekadashi, and understanding the planetary influences of the day.

Ramkeli, roughly 14 km south of Malda town near the ruins of medieval Gaur, is Bengal's foremost Vaishnava pilgrimage: Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu visited in 1515 CE, inspiring Rupa and Sanatana Goswami to renounce royal life for devotion. The site's ISKCON Ramkeli temple and eight sacred kunds mark the spot. Each Jaistha Sankranti, the week-long Ramkeli Mela draws thousands for naam-kirtan. The Gaur-Pandua ruins nearby preserve Bengal Sultanate-era stone carvings that include repurposed Hindu motifs. Panchang, choghadiya, and rahu kaal timings are computed for Malda's exact coordinates.

Malda's solar year — sunrise, sunset and day length

In Malda the longest day runs 13h 33m (June) and the shortest 10h 28m (December) — a seasonal swing of 3h 05m. Solar noon falls −22m from the 12:00 clock hour because Malda sits at 88.14°E rather than on the 82.5°E IST meridian. Every Tithi, Nakshatra and Rahu Kaal window on this page is derived from that sunrise, not from a national average.

Which places near Malda can read these Panchang timings

Rajmahal lies 32 km west of Malda and sees sunrise +1m to +2m against it, so the sunrise row of this Panchang moves by that much there. Across every place listed below the shift runs −3m to +5m and each of the eight daylight periods keeps the same length it has here, so the periods do not stretch — only the boundary moves.

Five Elements of Malda Panchang

The traditional Panchang (पंचांग, meaning “five limbs”) comprises five essential elements that determine auspiciousness for any activity in Malda:

Tithi (तिथि)

Lunar day — the angular relationship between Sun and Moon. 30 Tithis per lunar month.

Nakshatra (नक्षत्र)

Lunar mansion — the constellation the Moon occupies. 27 Nakshatras in the lunar zodiac.

Yoga (योग)

Combination of Sun and Moon longitudes. 27 Yogas from Vishkambha to Vaidhriti.

Karana (करण)

Half-Tithi — there are 11 Karanas, cycling through 60 Karanas in a lunar month.

Vara (वार)

Day of the week, each ruled by a planet (Sun=Sunday through Saturn=Saturday).

Malda Festivals & Panchang

Malda's major festivals — Ramkeli Mela, Durga Puja, Janmashtami— are calculated using the Hindu lunisolar calendar. Festival dates change each year because the lunar calendar drifts against the solar calendar. The Panchang above shows today's Tithi and Nakshatra. Frequently Asked Questions

How is today's Panchang calculated for Malda?

The Panchang for Malda is calculated using Swiss Ephemeris with Malda's exact coordinates (West Bengal, latitude/longitude). Sunrise in Malda ranges from 4:51–6:28 AM seasonally, which affects the start of each Tithi. The Panchang shows today's Tithi, Nakshatra, Yoga, Karana, and planetary positions — all calibrated to Malda's local time.

Can nearby towns like Rajmahal use Malda's Panchang timings?

Almost, with a small shift. Rajmahal lies 32 km west of Malda and sees sunrise +1m to +2m against it, so the sunrise row of this Panchang moves by that much there. Across the recorded places within 150 km of Malda that shift stays between −3m and +5m through the year — the nearby-place table above lists each one. For a town whose shift runs past a few minutes, compute with its own coordinates instead of copying Malda's slot.

Why are Malda's Panchang timings different from other cities?

Panchang timings vary because they are based on actual astronomical observations for a specific location. Malda's sunrise (4:51–6:28 AM), longitude, and latitude determine the precise start and end times of Tithis, Nakshatras, and Yogas. A Malda Panchang uses the city's actual coordinates rather than a single standard Indian time.

When is Ramkeli Mela in Malda in 2025–2026?

Ramkeli Mela dates are determined by the Hindu lunisolar calendar and are the same across India, though local observance customs vary. The Panchang above shows today's Tithi and Nakshatra, which you can use to track approaching festivals. For annual festival calendars, the Ishvaram Jyotish app provides complete Indian festival almanacs with Malda-specific timing where relevant.
