What is Panchang?+
Panchang(literally "five limbs") is the traditional Hindu calendar and almanac. It consists of five elements: Tithi (lunar day), Nakshatra (lunar mansion), Yoga (luni-solar combination), Karana (half of tithi), and Vara (weekday). It is used daily to determine auspicious timings for rituals, ceremonies, and important activities.
The Tithiis calculated from the angular distance between the Sun and Moon. Each 12 degrees of separation equals one tithi, giving 30 tithis in a lunar month — 15 in the waxing phase (Shukla Paksha) and 15 in the waning phase (Krishna Paksha).
Checking the daily panchang is an integral part of Hindu tradition. It helps in selecting muhurtas (auspicious moments) for starting new ventures, performing puja, fasting on specific tithis like Ekadashi, and understanding the planetary influences of the day.

Dehradun, the capital of Uttarakhand in the Doon Valley. Tapkeshwar Temple, Shri Ram Rai Darbar, and Sai Darbar Mandir are major sacred sites. Mahashivaratri and Navratri are the major festivals. As home to India's premier defense and research institutions, Dehradun has a unique blend of modern and traditional — muhurta consultation before major career and academic decisions is common.
Dehradun's solar year — sunrise, sunset and day length
In Dehradun the longest day runs 13h 57m (June) and the shortest 10h 04m (December) — a seasonal swing of 3h 53m. Solar noon falls +18m from the 12:00 clock hour because Dehradun sits at 78.03°E rather than on the 82.5°E IST meridian. Every Tithi, Nakshatra and Rahu Kaal window on this page is derived from that sunrise, not from a national average.

Five Elements of Dehradun Panchang
The traditional Panchang (पंचांग, meaning “five limbs”) comprises five essential elements that determine auspiciousness for any activity in Dehradun:
Tithi (तिथि)
Lunar day — the angular relationship between Sun and Moon. 30 Tithis per lunar month.
Nakshatra (नक्षत्र)
Lunar mansion — the constellation the Moon occupies. 27 Nakshatras in the lunar zodiac.
Yoga (योग)
Combination of Sun and Moon longitudes. 27 Yogas from Vishkambha to Vaidhriti.
Karana (करण)
Half-Tithi — there are 11 Karanas, cycling through 60 Karanas in a lunar month.
Vara (वार)
Day of the week, each ruled by a planet (Sun=Sunday through Saturn=Saturday).
Dehradun Festivals & Panchang
Dehradun's major festivals — Mahashivaratri, Navratri, Diwali— are calculated using the Hindu lunisolar calendar. Festival dates change each year because the lunar calendar drifts against the solar calendar. The Panchang above shows today's Tithi and Nakshatra. For complete annual festival almanacs with specific timings for Dehradun, use the Ishvaram Jyotish app.
Frequently Asked Questions
How is today's Panchang calculated for Dehradun?
The Panchang for Dehradun is calculated using Swiss Ephemeris with Dehradun's exact coordinates (Uttarakhand, latitude/longitude). Sunrise in Dehradun ranges from 5:20–7:19 AM seasonally, which affects the start of each Tithi. The Panchang shows today's Tithi, Nakshatra, Yoga, Karana, and planetary positions — all calibrated to Dehradun's local time.
Can nearby towns like Raipur use Dehradun's Panchang timings?
Almost, with a small shift. Raipur lies 6 km east of Dehradun and sees sunrise −1m to 0m against it, so the sunrise row of this Panchang moves by that much there. Across the recorded places within 150 km of Dehradun that shift stays between −3m and +4m through the year — the nearby-place table above lists each one. For a town whose shift runs past a few minutes, compute with its own coordinates instead of copying Dehradun's slot.
Why are Dehradun's Panchang timings different from other cities?
Panchang timings vary because they are based on actual astronomical observations for a specific location. Dehradun's sunrise (5:20–7:19 AM), longitude, and latitude determine the precise start and end times of Tithis, Nakshatras, and Yogas. A Dehradun Panchang uses the city's actual coordinates rather than a single standard Indian time.
When is Mahashivaratri in Dehradun in 2025–2026?
Mahashivaratri dates are determined by the Hindu lunisolar calendar and are the same across India, though local observance customs vary. The Panchang above shows today's Tithi and Nakshatra, which you can use to track approaching festivals. For annual festival calendars, the Ishvaram Jyotish app provides complete Indian festival almanacs with Dehradun-specific timing where relevant.
