What is Panchang?+

Panchang(literally "five limbs") is the traditional Hindu calendar and almanac. It consists of five elements: Tithi (lunar day), Nakshatra (lunar mansion), Yoga (luni-solar combination), Karana (half of tithi), and Vara (weekday). It is used daily to determine auspicious timings for rituals, ceremonies, and important activities.

The Tithiis calculated from the angular distance between the Sun and Moon. Each 12 degrees of separation equals one tithi, giving 30 tithis in a lunar month — 15 in the waxing phase (Shukla Paksha) and 15 in the waning phase (Krishna Paksha).

Checking the daily panchang is an integral part of Hindu tradition. It helps in selecting muhurtas (auspicious moments) for starting new ventures, performing puja, fasting on specific tithis like Ekadashi, and understanding the planetary influences of the day.

Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh's commercial capital on the Krishna River. Kanaka Durga Temple (one of the most powerful Shakti peethas in South India) is the city's most revered pilgrimage site. Ugadi, Dasara, and Sankranti are major festivals. The Kanaka Durga temple's rituals are deeply tied to the Panchanga — special austerities and timings during Navratri attract millions of devotees annually.

Vijayawada's solar year — sunrise, sunset and day length

In Vijayawada the longest day runs 12h 59m (June) and the shortest 11h 02m (December) — a seasonal swing of 1h 57m. Solar noon falls +8m from the 12:00 clock hour because Vijayawada sits at 80.65°E rather than on the 82.5°E IST meridian. Every Tithi, Nakshatra and Rahu Kaal window on this page is derived from that sunrise, not from a national average.

Karana (करण)

Vijayawada Festivals & Panchang

Frequently Asked Questions

How is today's Panchang calculated for Vijayawada?

The Panchang for Vijayawada is calculated using Swiss Ephemeris with Vijayawada's exact coordinates (Andhra Pradesh, latitude/longitude). Sunrise in Vijayawada ranges from 5:38–6:43 AM seasonally, which affects the start of each Tithi. The Panchang shows today's Tithi, Nakshatra, Yoga, Karana, and planetary positions — all calibrated to Vijayawada's local time.

Can nearby towns like Kanuru use Vijayawada's Panchang timings?

Almost, with a small shift. Kanuru lies 5 km east of Vijayawada and sees sunrise −1m to 0m against it, so the sunrise row of this Panchang moves by that much there. Across the recorded places within 150 km of Vijayawada that shift stays between −3m and +3m through the year — the nearby-place table above lists each one. For a town whose shift runs past a few minutes, compute with its own coordinates instead of copying Vijayawada's slot.

Why are Vijayawada's Panchang timings different from other cities?

Panchang timings vary because they are based on actual astronomical observations for a specific location. Vijayawada's sunrise (5:38–6:43 AM), longitude, and latitude determine the precise start and end times of Tithis, Nakshatras, and Yogas. A Vijayawada Panchang uses the city's actual coordinates rather than a single standard Indian time.

When is Ugadi in Vijayawada in 2025–2026?

Ugadi dates are determined by the Hindu lunisolar calendar and are the same across India, though local observance customs vary. The Panchang above shows today's Tithi and Nakshatra, which you can use to track approaching festivals. For annual festival calendars, the Ishvaram Jyotish app provides complete Indian festival almanacs with Vijayawada-specific timing where relevant.
