What is Panchang?+
Panchang(literally "five limbs") is the traditional Hindu calendar and almanac. It consists of five elements: Tithi (lunar day), Nakshatra (lunar mansion), Yoga (luni-solar combination), Karana (half of tithi), and Vara (weekday). It is used daily to determine auspicious timings for rituals, ceremonies, and important activities.
The Tithiis calculated from the angular distance between the Sun and Moon. Each 12 degrees of separation equals one tithi, giving 30 tithis in a lunar month — 15 in the waxing phase (Shukla Paksha) and 15 in the waning phase (Krishna Paksha).
Checking the daily panchang is an integral part of Hindu tradition. It helps in selecting muhurtas (auspicious moments) for starting new ventures, performing puja, fasting on specific tithis like Ekadashi, and understanding the planetary influences of the day.

Surat, the diamond and textile capital of India, follows IST. Swaminarayan Temple and Sarthana Jain Tirth are the city's major sacred centers. Uttarayan is celebrated with particular enthusiasm in the diamond city. Surat's dominant Jain community has a well-established tradition of seeking auspicious muhurtas for diamond trading, business openings, and major financial transactions.
Surat's solar year — sunrise, sunset and day length
In Surat the longest day runs 13h 17m (June) and the shortest 10h 44m (December) — a seasonal swing of 2h 33m. Every Tithi, Nakshatra and Rahu Kaal window on this page is derived from that sunrise, not from a national average.

Five Elements of Surat Panchang
The traditional Panchang (पंचांग, meaning “five limbs”) comprises five essential elements that determine auspiciousness for any activity in Surat:
Tithi (तिथि)
Lunar day — the angular relationship between Sun and Moon. 30 Tithis per lunar month.
Nakshatra (नक्षत्र)
Lunar mansion — the constellation the Moon occupies. 27 Nakshatras in the lunar zodiac.
Yoga (योग)
Combination of Sun and Moon longitudes. 27 Yogas from Vishkambha to Vaidhriti.
Karana (करण)
Half-Tithi — there are 11 Karanas, cycling through 60 Karanas in a lunar month.
Vara (वार)
Day of the week, each ruled by a planet (Sun=Sunday through Saturn=Saturday).
Surat Festivals & Panchang
Surat's major festivals — Uttarayan, Navratri, Diwali— are calculated using the Hindu lunisolar calendar. Festival dates change each year because the lunar calendar drifts against the solar calendar. The Panchang above shows today's Tithi and Nakshatra. For complete annual festival almanacs with specific timings for Surat, use the Ishvaram Jyotish app.
Frequently Asked Questions
How is today's Panchang calculated for Surat?
The Panchang for Surat is calculated using Swiss Ephemeris with Surat's exact coordinates (Gujarat, latitude/longitude). Sunrise in Surat ranges from 6:01–7:22 AM seasonally, which affects the start of each Tithi. The Panchang shows today's Tithi, Nakshatra, Yoga, Karana, and planetary positions — all calibrated to Surat's local time.
Can nearby towns like Sachin use Surat's Panchang timings?
Almost, with a small shift. Sachin lies 11 km south-east of Surat and sees sunrise −1m to 0m against it, so the sunrise row of this Panchang moves by that much there. Across the recorded places within 150 km of Surat that shift stays between −3m and +1m through the year — the nearby-place table above lists each one. For a town whose shift runs past a few minutes, compute with its own coordinates instead of copying Surat's slot.
Why are Surat's Panchang timings different from other cities?
Panchang timings vary because they are based on actual astronomical observations for a specific location. Surat's sunrise (6:01–7:22 AM), longitude, and latitude determine the precise start and end times of Tithis, Nakshatras, and Yogas. A Surat Panchang uses the city's actual coordinates rather than a single standard Indian time.
When is Uttarayan in Surat in 2025–2026?
Uttarayan dates are determined by the Hindu lunisolar calendar and are the same across India, though local observance customs vary. The Panchang above shows today's Tithi and Nakshatra, which you can use to track approaching festivals. For annual festival calendars, the Ishvaram Jyotish app provides complete Indian festival almanacs with Surat-specific timing where relevant.
