What is Panchang?+

Panchang(literally "five limbs") is the traditional Hindu calendar and almanac. It consists of five elements: Tithi (lunar day), Nakshatra (lunar mansion), Yoga (luni-solar combination), Karana (half of tithi), and Vara (weekday). It is used daily to determine auspicious timings for rituals, ceremonies, and important activities.

The Tithiis calculated from the angular distance between the Sun and Moon. Each 12 degrees of separation equals one tithi, giving 30 tithis in a lunar month — 15 in the waxing phase (Shukla Paksha) and 15 in the waning phase (Krishna Paksha).

Checking the daily panchang is an integral part of Hindu tradition. It helps in selecting muhurtas (auspicious moments) for starting new ventures, performing puja, fasting on specific tithis like Ekadashi, and understanding the planetary influences of the day.

Lucknow, the City of Nawabs. Mankameshwar Temple, Aliganj Hanuman Temple, and Chota Imambara are major spiritual sites. Ram Navami, Dussehra, and Chhath Puja are observed with great devotion in this UP capital. As a traditional city with deep Sanskrit scholarly roots, Lucknow has strong traditions of Panchanga consultation and Vedic astrology.

Lucknow's solar year — sunrise, sunset and day length

In Lucknow the longest day runs 13h 41m (June) and the shortest 10h 20m (December) — a seasonal swing of 3h 21m. Solar noon falls +6m from the 12:00 clock hour because Lucknow sits at 80.95°E rather than on the 82.5°E IST meridian. Every Tithi, Nakshatra and Rahu Kaal window on this page is derived from that sunrise, not from a national average.

Which places near Lucknow can read these Panchang timings

Nawabganj lies 27 km east of Lucknow and sees sunrise −2m to 0m against it, so the sunrise row of this Panchang moves by that much there. Across every place listed below the shift runs −4m to +4m and each of the eight daylight periods keeps the same length it has here, so the periods do not stretch — only the boundary moves.

Five Elements of Lucknow Panchang

Nakshatra (नक्षत्र)

Lunar mansion — the constellation the Moon occupies. 27 Nakshatras in the lunar zodiac.

Yoga (योग)

Combination of Sun and Moon longitudes. 27 Yogas from Vishkambha to Vaidhriti.

Karana (करण)

Half-Tithi — there are 11 Karanas, cycling through 60 Karanas in a lunar month.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is today's Panchang calculated for Lucknow?

The Panchang for Lucknow is calculated using Swiss Ephemeris with Lucknow's exact coordinates (Uttar Pradesh, latitude/longitude). Sunrise in Lucknow ranges from 5:16–7:01 AM seasonally, which affects the start of each Tithi. The Panchang shows today's Tithi, Nakshatra, Yoga, Karana, and planetary positions — all calibrated to Lucknow's local time.

Can nearby towns like Nawabganj use Lucknow's Panchang timings?

Almost, with a small shift. Nawabganj lies 27 km east of Lucknow and sees sunrise −2m to 0m against it, so the sunrise row of this Panchang moves by that much there. Across the recorded places within 150 km of Lucknow that shift stays between −4m and +4m through the year — the nearby-place table above lists each one. For a town whose shift runs past a few minutes, compute with its own coordinates instead of copying Lucknow's slot.

Why are Lucknow's Panchang timings different from other cities?

Panchang timings vary because they are based on actual astronomical observations for a specific location. Lucknow's sunrise (5:16–7:01 AM), longitude, and latitude determine the precise start and end times of Tithis, Nakshatras, and Yogas. A Lucknow Panchang uses the city's actual coordinates rather than a single standard Indian time.

When is Ram Navami in Lucknow in 2025–2026?

Ram Navami dates are determined by the Hindu lunisolar calendar and are the same across India, though local observance customs vary. The Panchang above shows today's Tithi and Nakshatra, which you can use to track approaching festivals. For annual festival calendars, the Ishvaram Jyotish app provides complete Indian festival almanacs with Lucknow-specific timing where relevant.
