What is Panchang?+

Panchang(literally "five limbs") is the traditional Hindu calendar and almanac. It consists of five elements: Tithi (lunar day), Nakshatra (lunar mansion), Yoga (luni-solar combination), Karana (half of tithi), and Vara (weekday). It is used daily to determine auspicious timings for rituals, ceremonies, and important activities.

The Tithiis calculated from the angular distance between the Sun and Moon. Each 12 degrees of separation equals one tithi, giving 30 tithis in a lunar month — 15 in the waxing phase (Shukla Paksha) and 15 in the waning phase (Krishna Paksha).

Checking the daily panchang is an integral part of Hindu tradition. It helps in selecting muhurtas (auspicious moments) for starting new ventures, performing puja, fasting on specific tithis like Ekadashi, and understanding the planetary influences of the day.

Kolkata, the cultural capital of India. Dakshineswar Kali Temple and Kalighat Temple are prominent pilgrimage sites in the Kolkata area. Durga Puja is celebrated citywide, and Kali Puja is also a major local observance.

Kolkata's solar year — sunrise, sunset and day length

In Kolkata the longest day runs 13h 23m (June) and the shortest 10h 38m (December) — a seasonal swing of 2h 45m. Solar noon falls −23m from the 12:00 clock hour because Kolkata sits at 88.36°E rather than on the 82.5°E IST meridian. Every Tithi, Nakshatra and Rahu Kaal window on this page is derived from that sunrise, not from a national average.

Which places near Kolkata can read these Panchang timings

Howrah lies 5 km west of Kolkata and sees sunrise 0m to +1m against it, so the sunrise row of this Panchang moves by that much there. Across every place listed below the shift runs −1m to +1m and each of the eight daylight periods keeps the same length it has here, so the periods do not stretch — only the boundary moves.

Five Elements of Kolkata Panchang

The traditional Panchang (पंचांग, meaning “five limbs”) comprises five essential elements that determine auspiciousness for any activity in Kolkata:

Tithi (तिथि)

Lunar day — the angular relationship between Sun and Moon. 30 Tithis per lunar month.

Nakshatra (नक्षत्र)

Lunar mansion — the constellation the Moon occupies. 27 Nakshatras in the lunar zodiac.

Yoga (योग)

Combination of Sun and Moon longitudes. 27 Yogas from Vishkambha to Vaidhriti.

Karana (करण)

Half-Tithi — there are 11 Karanas, cycling through 60 Karanas in a lunar month.

Vara (वार)

Day of the week, each ruled by a planet (Sun=Sunday through Saturn=Saturday).

Kolkata Festivals & Panchang

Kolkata's major festivals — Durga Puja, Kali Puja, Rath Yatra— are calculated using the Hindu lunisolar calendar. Festival dates change each year because the lunar calendar drifts against the solar calendar. The Panchang above shows today's Tithi and Nakshatra. For complete annual festival almanacs with specific timings for Kolkata, use the Ishvaram Jyotish app.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is today's Panchang calculated for Kolkata?

The Panchang for Kolkata is calculated using Swiss Ephemeris with Kolkata's exact coordinates (West Bengal, latitude/longitude). Sunrise in Kolkata ranges from 4:56–6:23 AM seasonally, which affects the start of each Tithi. The Panchang shows today's Tithi, Nakshatra, Yoga, Karana, and planetary positions — all calibrated to Kolkata's local time.

Can nearby towns like Howrah use Kolkata's Panchang timings?

Almost, with a small shift. Howrah lies 5 km west of Kolkata and sees sunrise 0m to +1m against it, so the sunrise row of this Panchang moves by that much there. Across the recorded places within 150 km of Kolkata that shift stays between −1m and +1m through the year — the nearby-place table above lists each one. For a town whose shift runs past a few minutes, compute with its own coordinates instead of copying Kolkata's slot.

Why are Kolkata's Panchang timings different from other cities?

Panchang timings vary because they are based on actual astronomical observations for a specific location. Kolkata's sunrise (4:56–6:23 AM), longitude, and latitude determine the precise start and end times of Tithis, Nakshatras, and Yogas. A Kolkata Panchang uses the city's actual coordinates rather than a single standard Indian time.

When is Durga Puja in Kolkata in 2025–2026?

Durga Puja dates are determined by the Hindu lunisolar calendar and are the same across India, though local observance customs vary. The Panchang above shows today's Tithi and Nakshatra, which you can use to track approaching festivals. For annual festival calendars, the Ishvaram Jyotish app provides complete Indian festival almanacs with Kolkata-specific timing where relevant.
