What is Panchang?+
Panchang(literally "five limbs") is the traditional Hindu calendar and almanac. It consists of five elements: Tithi (lunar day), Nakshatra (lunar mansion), Yoga (luni-solar combination), Karana (half of tithi), and Vara (weekday). It is used daily to determine auspicious timings for rituals, ceremonies, and important activities.
The Tithiis calculated from the angular distance between the Sun and Moon. Each 12 degrees of separation equals one tithi, giving 30 tithis in a lunar month — 15 in the waxing phase (Shukla Paksha) and 15 in the waning phase (Krishna Paksha).
Checking the daily panchang is an integral part of Hindu tradition. It helps in selecting muhurtas (auspicious moments) for starting new ventures, performing puja, fasting on specific tithis like Ekadashi, and understanding the planetary influences of the day.

Jamshedpur, India's first planned steel city, is cradled between the Subarnarekha and Kharkai rivers whose confluence at Domuhani Ghat transforms into a luminous arena of ritual during Chhath Puja, the city's most celebrated festival. The Bhuvaneshwari Temple atop Telco Hill, built in 1978 in Dravidian style with a 64-foot Rajagopuram, overlooks the township and draws devotees year-round. The Sakchi Hanuman Mandir in the original township is a longstanding local shrine. Durga Puja and Ganesh Puja are observed with great fervour. Panchang, choghadiya, and rahu kaal timings are computed for Jamshedpur's exact coordinates.

Five Elements of Jamshedpur Panchang
The traditional Panchang (पंचांग, meaning “five limbs”) comprises five essential elements that determine auspiciousness for any activity in Jamshedpur:
Tithi (तिथि)
Lunar day — the angular relationship between Sun and Moon. 30 Tithis per lunar month.
Nakshatra (नक्षत्र)
Lunar mansion — the constellation the Moon occupies. 27 Nakshatras in the lunar zodiac.
Yoga (योग)
Combination of Sun and Moon longitudes. 27 Yogas from Vishkambha to Vaidhriti.
Karana (करण)
Half-Tithi — there are 11 Karanas, cycling through 60 Karanas in a lunar month.
Vara (वार)
Day of the week, each ruled by a planet (Sun=Sunday through Saturn=Saturday).
Jamshedpur Festivals & Panchang
Jamshedpur's major festivals — Chhath Puja, Durga Puja, Ganesh Puja— are calculated using the Hindu lunisolar calendar. Festival dates change each year because the lunar calendar drifts against the solar calendar. The Panchang above shows today's Tithi and Nakshatra. Why are Jamshedpur's Panchang timings different from other cities?
Panchang timings vary because they are based on actual astronomical observations for a specific location. Jamshedpur's sunrise (5:07 AM–6:23 AM), longitude, and latitude determine the precise start and end times of Tithis, Nakshatras, and Yogas. A Jamshedpur Panchang uses the city's actual coordinates rather than a single standard Indian time.
