What is Panchang?+
Panchang(literally "five limbs") is the traditional Hindu calendar and almanac. It consists of five elements: Tithi (lunar day), Nakshatra (lunar mansion), Yoga (luni-solar combination), Karana (half of tithi), and Vara (weekday). It is used daily to determine auspicious timings for rituals, ceremonies, and important activities.
The Tithiis calculated from the angular distance between the Sun and Moon. Each 12 degrees of separation equals one tithi, giving 30 tithis in a lunar month — 15 in the waxing phase (Shukla Paksha) and 15 in the waning phase (Krishna Paksha).
Checking the daily panchang is an integral part of Hindu tradition. It helps in selecting muhurtas (auspicious moments) for starting new ventures, performing puja, fasting on specific tithis like Ekadashi, and understanding the planetary influences of the day.

Raghunath Temple, the largest temple complex in North India, anchors Jammu's identity as the City of Temples. Built between 1835 and 1860 by the Dogra rulers Maharaja Gulab Singh and Maharaja Ranbir Singh, it enshrines idols of Ram, Sita, and Lakshman and celebrates Ram Navami and Dussehra with grand pomp. The Ranbireshwar Temple on Shalamar Road and the Peer Khoh cave shrine are further in-city landmarks. Jammu serves as the gateway for pilgrims to Vaishno Devi, whose shrine at Katra is approximately 49 km away. Panchang, choghadiya, and rahu kaal timings are computed for Jammu's exact coordinates.
Jammu's solar year — sunrise, sunset and day length
In Jammu the longest day runs 14h 09m (June) and the shortest 9h 52m (December) — a seasonal swing of 4h 17m. Solar noon falls +31m from the 12:00 clock hour because Jammu sits at 74.86°E rather than on the 82.5°E IST meridian. Every Tithi, Nakshatra and Rahu Kaal window on this page is derived from that sunrise, not from a national average.

Five Elements of Jammu Panchang
The traditional Panchang (पंचांग, meaning “five limbs”) comprises five essential elements that determine auspiciousness for any activity in Jammu:
Tithi (तिथि)
Lunar day — the angular relationship between Sun and Moon. 30 Tithis per lunar month.
Nakshatra (नक्षत्र)
Lunar mansion — the constellation the Moon occupies. 27 Nakshatras in the lunar zodiac.
Yoga (योग)
Combination of Sun and Moon longitudes. 27 Yogas from Vishkambha to Vaidhriti.
Karana (करण)
Half-Tithi — there are 11 Karanas, cycling through 60 Karanas in a lunar month.
Vara (वार)
Day of the week, each ruled by a planet (Sun=Sunday through Saturn=Saturday).
Jammu Festivals & Panchang
Jammu's major festivals — Ram Navami (Raghunath Temple), Dussehra, Maha Shivratri— are calculated using the Hindu lunisolar calendar. Festival dates change each year because the lunar calendar drifts against the solar calendar. The Panchang above shows today's Tithi and Nakshatra. For complete annual festival almanacs with specific timings for Jammu, use the Ishvaram Jyotish app.
Frequently Asked Questions
How is today's Panchang calculated for Jammu?
The Panchang for Jammu is calculated using Swiss Ephemeris with Jammu's exact coordinates (Jammu & Kashmir, latitude/longitude). Sunrise in Jammu ranges from 5:27–7:37 AM seasonally, which affects the start of each Tithi. The Panchang shows today's Tithi, Nakshatra, Yoga, Karana, and planetary positions — all calibrated to Jammu's local time.
Can nearby towns like Raipur Domana use Jammu's Panchang timings?
Almost, with a small shift. Raipur Domana lies 11 km north-west of Jammu and sees sunrise 0m to +1m against it, so the sunrise row of this Panchang moves by that much there. Across the recorded places within 150 km of Jammu that shift stays between −5m and +4m through the year — the nearby-place table above lists each one. For a town whose shift runs past a few minutes, compute with its own coordinates instead of copying Jammu's slot.
Why are Jammu's Panchang timings different from other cities?
Panchang timings vary because they are based on actual astronomical observations for a specific location. Jammu's sunrise (5:27–7:37 AM), longitude, and latitude determine the precise start and end times of Tithis, Nakshatras, and Yogas. A Jammu Panchang uses the city's actual coordinates rather than a single standard Indian time.
When is Ram Navami (Raghunath Temple) in Jammu in 2025–2026?
Ram Navami (Raghunath Temple) dates are determined by the Hindu lunisolar calendar and are the same across India, though local observance customs vary. The Panchang above shows today's Tithi and Nakshatra, which you can use to track approaching festivals. For annual festival calendars, the Ishvaram Jyotish app provides complete Indian festival almanacs with Jammu-specific timing where relevant.
