Gajakesari Yoga
Gajakesari (elephant and lion) is a yoga of Jupiter. Most software announces it whenever Jupiter is in a kendra from the Moon, which happens in about one chart in three. The classical definition adds conditions that most of those charts do not meet.
How it forms
Jupiter is in a kendra (1st, 4th, 7th or 10th house) from the Lagna or from the Moon, is conjoined with or aspected by another benefic, and is not debilitated, not combust and not in an enemy's sign.

The simpler form, Jupiter and the Moon in kendras from each other, is the one most commonly used. R. Santhanam's note on the verse above points out that Phaladeepika calls this form Kesari yoga.

Conditions that weaken or cancel it
- Jupiter debilitated (in Makara) does not meet the classical rule.
- Jupiter combust, that is too close to the Sun to be visible, does not meet it.
- Jupiter in a sign of its enemies Mercury or Venus (Mithuna, Kanya, Vrishabha, Tula) does not meet it.
- Without a benefic joining or aspecting Jupiter, only the popular form is present, not the one Parashara describes.
Is Gajakesari Yoga in your chart?
The Ishvaram kundali engine marks Gajakesari when Jupiter is in the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th sign from the Moon. It grades the yoga weak when Jupiter is debilitated and moderate when Jupiter is combust (within 11 degrees of the Sun) or retrograde. It does not check the benefic aspect, the enemy-sign condition or the kendra from the Lagna, so read those yourself before treating a detected Gajakesari as the classical one.
The engine counts Gajakesari from the Moon only, not from the Lagna, so your birth date and place can be enough: if the Moon and Jupiter stayed in one sign all that day, the check answers without a birth time. The engine's strength grade and the house numbers need your birth time.
Generate your free kundali: its Yogas section lists the yogas the engine finds in your chart, with the planets involved and a strength grade, and names the ones it checked that are not formed.
What it means
- BPHS gives the result as a person who is splendorous, wealthy, intelligent, has many praiseworthy qualities and pleases the king (36.4).
- It shows a well-placed Jupiter in relation to the mind (the Moon) or the self (the Lagna).
What it does not mean
- It is not rare: by the popular rule about a third of all charts have it.
- It does not promise fame or wealth on its own; the rest of the chart and the running dasha decide how it shows.
- It is a supportive combination and needs no remedy.
Gajakesari Yoga questions
How common is Gajakesari yoga?
Under the popular rule, Jupiter in a kendra from the Moon, about one chart in three has it, because Jupiter falls in four of the twelve signs counted from the Moon. The classical rule, with its conditions on dignity, combustion and benefic aspect, is met far less often.
Is Gajakesari yoga cancelled if Jupiter is debilitated?
Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra requires Jupiter to avoid debilitation, combustion and an enemy's sign. A debilitated Jupiter in a kendra from the Moon therefore does not form the yoga as Parashara defines it.
Do I need a remedy for Gajakesari yoga?
No. It is a supportive yoga. Remedies in the tradition are for afflictions, not for beneficial combinations.
