Budhaditya Yoga

Budhaditya (Budha, Mercury, with Aditya, the Sun) is the name for the Sun and Mercury in the same sign. Mercury never moves more than about 28 degrees from the Sun, so this pairing is one of the most frequent in any chart.

How it forms

  • The Sun and Mercury occupy the same sign (house).

Source: Saravali of Kalyana Varma (R. Santhanam translation), Ch. 15 (Conjunctions of two planets), v. 4

Conditions that weaken or cancel it

  • Mercury within about 14 degrees of the Sun is combust; many astrologers read the yoga as weaker then, because Mercury's own significations are overpowered.
  • A Mercury or Sun that is debilitated (Mercury in Meena, the Sun in Tula) weakens the pairing.
  • The sign and house decide which affairs the pairing colours: the same yoga in the 10th house and in the 12th house reads differently.

Is Budhaditya Yoga in your chart?

The Ishvaram kundali engine marks Budhaditya when the Sun and Mercury are in the same house. It grades the yoga weak when either planet is debilitated and moderate when either is combust (Mercury within 14 degrees of the Sun). Because Mercury is so often close to the Sun, expect the moderate grade often.

The engine counts each house as one whole sign, so the Sun and Mercury share a house exactly when they share a sign, and the Lagna does not decide Budhaditya. Your birth date and place can be enough: if the Sun and Mercury each stayed in one sign all that day, the check answers without a birth time. The engine's strength grade partly turns on how close Mercury is to the Sun, which shifts during the day, so the grade and the house numbers need your birth time.

What it means

  • Saravali describes the person as in service, with unsteady wealth, sweet in speech, with fame and money, noble, dear to the king and to good people, and endowed with strength, beauty and learning (Ch. 15, v. 4).
  • It links the self and authority (the Sun) with intellect and speech (Mercury) in one area of life.

What it does not mean

  • It is not a rare mark of genius; a large share of all charts have it.
  • The same verse mentions unsteady wealth, so it is not a wealth yoga by itself.
  • It is a supportive combination and needs no remedy.

Budhaditya Yoga questions

Why is Budhaditya yoga so common?

Mercury orbits close to the Sun and, seen from Earth, never gets more than about 28 degrees away from it. The two are therefore in the same sign in a large share of all charts, and never more than one sign apart.

Does combust Mercury cancel Budhaditya yoga?

It does not remove the conjunction, but many astrologers read a combust Mercury as weakened, so the yoga gives less of Mercury's intellect and speech. The engine grades such a yoga as moderate.

Is Budhaditya yoga in Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra?

The name is a later, popular one. The classical source used here is Saravali, which describes the Sun and Mercury in one house among its two-planet combinations.
