ओणम (Onam) भाद्रपद मास में आने वाला एक पर्व है। इसकी तिथि ग्रेगोरियन कैलेंडर से नहीं, पंचांग की तिथि से तय होती है, इसलिए हर वर्ष अंग्रेज़ी तारीख बदलती है और पंचांग से ही निकाली जाती है। इस दिन कोई व्रत निर्धारित नहीं है। पर्व का स्वरूप और पूजा विधि हर वर्ष वही रहती है।

इस पर्व के बारे में

केरल का दस-दिवसीय फ़सल पर्व, जो राजा महाबलि के स्वागत में मनाया जाता है — द्वार-द्वार पर पूकलम की फूल-सज्जा, नौका दौड़ और केले के पत्ते पर परोसी जाने वाली ओणम सद्या इसकी पहचान हैं।

Kerala's ten-day harvest festival welcoming King Mahabali home — pookalam flower carpets grow petal-ring by petal-ring at every threshold, snake-boat races churn the backwaters, and families share the twenty-six-dish Onam Sadhya on banana leaf.

महत्व

Recalls the golden reign of the asura king Mahabali, so beloved that Vishnu — as Vamana — granted him the boon of returning to his people once each year. Onam is that annual homecoming: the pookalam is laid to welcome him, and the Sadhya is the feast served in his honour. Though rooted in the Vamana avatar katha, the festival transcends community lines across Kerala as a celebration of harvest abundance, humility rewarded, and a ruler judged by his people's happiness — the meaning behind Thiruvonam, its most sacred day.

पूजा विधि (कैसे मनाएँ)

Through the ten days, lay a fresh pookalam at the entrance each morning, widening it ring by ring until Thiruvonam. Bathe early on the main day, wear kasavu (cream-and-gold) clothes, and place the pyramidal Onathappan (Vamana-Mahabali) figures of clay at the pookalam with flowers and lamps. Prepare the Onam Sadhya — rice, sambar, avial, olan, thoran, pachadi, banana chips, and payasam — and serve it on banana leaf to family and guests alike. Traditional games, Thiruvathira dance, and swings fill the afternoon.
