महा शिवरात्रि (Maha Shivaratri) फाल्गुन मास में आने वाला एक पर्व है। इसकी तिथि ग्रेगोरियन कैलेंडर से नहीं, पंचांग की तिथि से तय होती है, इसलिए हर वर्ष अंग्रेज़ी तारीख बदलती है और पंचांग से ही निकाली जाती है। इस दिन परंपरा में व्रत रखा जाता है। पर्व का स्वरूप और पूजा विधि हर वर्ष वही रहती है।

हर वर्ष यह पर्व फाल्गुन मास के कृष्ण पक्ष की Chaturdashi तिथि को मनाया जाता है। चंद्र तिथि और ग्रेगोरियन कैलेंडर के अंतर के कारण अंग्रेज़ी तारीख़ हर वर्ष बदलती है।

इस पर्व के बारे में

भगवान शिव की महारात्रि — वर्ष की सबसे पवित्र रात्रि, जब मंदिर रात भर खुले रहते हैं, शिवलिंग का निरंतर रुद्राभिषेक होता है और भक्त व्रत, जागरण और ओम नमः शिवाय के जप के साथ पूरी रात साधना करते हैं।

The Great Night of Shiva — the most sacred night of the year for Shiva devotees, when temples stay open through the night, Shivlings are bathed in continuous Rudrabhishek, and lakhs of seekers keep an all-night vigil (jagaran) with fasting, mantra japa, and meditation.

महत्व

Celebrates the marriage of Shiva and Parvati, and the night Shiva performed the cosmic Tandava. Tradition holds that spiritual effort on this one night carries the fruit of a year of sadhana — which is why ascetics, householders, and first-time fasters all observe it together. For those running Shani or Rahu periods, Shiva worship on this night is considered an especially powerful upay for easing obstacles and fear.

पूजा विधि (कैसे मनाएँ)

Take a sankalp (vow) after morning bath and observe a full-day fast — fruits and milk are permitted in most family traditions. Visit a Shiva temple or set up a Shivling at home. Perform Rudrabhishek by bathing the Shivling with milk, honey, curd, ghee, and water in turn. Offer bel patra with the smooth side touching the ling, plus dhatura, white flowers, and chandan. Keep jagaran through the four prahars of the night, chanting Om Namah Shivaya or the Mahamrityunjaya mantra. Break the fast the next morning after a final darshan.
