Significance

Farmers honour snakes as protectors of the monsoon crop from rodents; digging the earth and ploughing are traditionally paused for the day so no serpent home is disturbed.

Clean the entrance and draw or paste a nag figure with haldi, roli, or geru beside the door. Offer milk, kheer, roasted grain, and durva at a nag temple, shivling, or anthill — placing the bowl beside it, never forcing a live snake to drink. Recite the Nag Gayatri or the names of the ashta-nagas. Those with Kaal Sarp Dosh in the kundli may perform a simple Rahu-Ketu shanti japa today. Avoid digging, ploughing, and cutting greens for the day; feed brahmins or the needy in the nagas' name.
