Hindu Calendar/Hariyali Teej

Hariyali Teej (हरियाली तीज) is a festival falling in the Hindu lunar month of श्रावण. Its position is fixed by tithi rather than by the Gregorian calendar, so the date moves every year and is computed from the panchang. Tradition keeps a fast on the day. The observance itself, and its puja vidhi, stay the same each year.

Each year this observance falls on the Tritiya tithi of the Shukla Paksha in the Hindu month of Shravana. Because lunar tithis drift against the Gregorian calendar, the English date shifts every year — the tithi rule above is what stays fixed.

About This Festival

The monsoon festival of Shiva and Parvati's reunion — married women in green lehariya, mehndi, and bangles keep a nirjala or phalahar vrat for their husband's long life, gather at swings hung from trees, and sing Teej geet through the day.

Significance

Commemorates the day Parvati's long tapasya was rewarded and Shiva accepted her as his consort — making the vrat a prayer for an unbreakable marriage. Unmarried girls keep it for a good husband, the same intention behind the classical Gauri-Shankar upay for a weak 7th house or delayed vivah. Falling in Sawan when the earth turns green, the festival celebrates Prakriti herself: swings, lehariya saris, and the first mehndi of the season all carry the monsoon's shringar. Mothers send the sindhara — sweets, bangles, and clothes — to married daughters.

Puja Vidhi (How to Observe)

Women bathe, apply mehndi, and dress in green with full solah shringar. A murti of Gauri- Shankar or of Parvati is worshipped with flowers, sindoor, and shringar items — bangles, bindi, mehndi — while the Teej katha of Parvati's tapasya is heard. Many keep the vrat nirjala until moonrise or the next sunrise, others take fruit and water. Evening is for jhoola (swings), Teej songs, and ghewar. The shringar items offered are later given to a suhagin or a brahmin's wife as daan.
