Hindu Calendar/Tulsi Vivah

Tulsi Vivah (तुलसी विवाह) is a festival falling in the Hindu lunar month of कार्तिक. Its position is fixed by tithi rather than by the Gregorian calendar, so the date moves every year and is computed from the panchang. No fast is prescribed for the day. The observance itself, and its puja vidhi, stay the same each year.

Each year this observance falls on the Ekadashi tithi of the Shukla Paksha in the Hindu month of Margashirsha. Because lunar tithis drift against the Gregorian calendar, the English date shifts every year — the tithi rule above is what stays fixed.

About This Festival

The ceremonial wedding of Tulsi Mata to Shaligram (Vishnu) — the tulsi chaura is decorated as a mandap, the full vivah sanskar is performed at dusk, and the day reopens the vivah season paused through Chaturmas.

Significance

Celebrates Vrinda's unmatched devotion, honoured by Vishnu's vow to wed her each year as Tulsi. Performing the vivah is held equal to a kanyadaan — the reason childless couples and parents without daughters especially sponsor it. Because it follows Dev Uthani Ekadashi, when Vishnu wakes from his four-month yoga nidra, the ceremony flags the reopening of vivah, griha pravesh, and every muhurat suspended through Chaturmas. Households that keep a daily tulsi diya treat this as the plant-goddess's own great festival, and a tulsi-linked upay day for Guru-related delays in marriage.

Puja Vidhi (How to Observe)

Bathe the tulsi chaura and decorate it as a mandap with sugarcane, rangoli, flowers, and a red chunari on the plant. Place the Shaligram (or a Vishnu murti) on a chauki beside her. At dusk perform the vivah krama — sankalp, kanyadaan by the household couple, mangalsutra and chunari to Tulsi, haldi to both, and seven pheras of the chaura with the Shaligram carried in hand. Offer kheer, batasha, and seasonal fruit; sing vivah geet. Distribute prasad and keep a ghee diya at the chaura through the night.
