Hindu Calendar/Ram Navami

Ram Navami (राम नवमी) is a festival falling in the Hindu lunar month of चैत्र. Its position is fixed by tithi rather than by the Gregorian calendar, so the date moves every year and is computed from the panchang. Tradition keeps a fast on the day. The observance itself, and its puja vidhi, stay the same each year.

Each year this observance falls on the Navami tithi of the Shukla Paksha in the Hindu month of Chaitra. Because lunar tithis drift against the Gregorian calendar, the English date shifts every year — the tithi rule above is what stays fixed.

About This Festival

The birth anniversary of Bhagwan Shri Ram, celebrated at midday — the muhurat of his birth in Ayodhya — with Ramayan path, bhajans, temple processions, and vrat.

भगवान श्रीराम का जन्मोत्सव — मध्याह्न के समय रामायण पाठ, भजन, शोभा-यात्रा और व्रत के साथ पूरे देश में मनाया जाता है।

Significance

Closes the nine days of Chaitra Navratri with the birth of Vishnu's seventh avatar. Ram embodies maryada — righteous conduct under every pressure — so the day is observed as a renewal of dharma in the household. Devotees read the Sundara Kanda or Ram Raksha Stotra for protection and courage; those with an afflicted Surya in the kundli treat Ram bhakti on this day as a strengthening upay, since Ram is Suryavanshi. In Ayodhya lakhs take snan in the Sarayu and temple bells ring through the noon hour of his birth.

Puja Vidhi (How to Observe)

Fast from sunrise; sattvik fruit and milk are commonly allowed. Bathe and dress a murti or image of Ram Darbar — Ram, Sita, Lakshman, and Hanuman — with flowers and chandan. At midday, the muhurat of Ram's birth, perform abhishek of the infant Ram (Ram Lalla), offer tulsi leaves, panjiri, and kheer, and sing the birth bhajans. Read the Ram Raksha Stotra or a chapter of the Ramcharitmanas. Conclude with aarti; many families end the vrat after the midday puja, others at sunset.
