Hindu Calendar/Matru Navami (Avidhava Navami)

Matru Navami (Avidhava Navami) (मातृ नवमी (अविधवा नवमी)) is a tithi-based observance falling in the Hindu lunar month of भाद्रपद. Its position is fixed by tithi rather than by the Gregorian calendar, so the date moves every year and is computed from the panchang. No fast is prescribed for the day.

Each year this observance falls on the Navami tithi of the Krishna Paksha in the Hindu month of Ashvina. Because lunar tithis drift against the Gregorian calendar, the English date shifts every year — the tithi rule above is what stays fixed.

About This Festival

The Matri Navami of Pitru Paksha — the shraddh day reserved for departed mothers, grandmothers, and all deceased women of the family, observed with tarpan, pind-daan, and feeding of brahmins in their memory.

Significance

Navami of the dark fortnight of Bhadrapada is set apart for the maternal line — the day scriptures assign for shraddh of mothers who have passed on, and of any woman of the family whose exact death tithi is unknown. Honouring the matri-pitrs today is held to lift Matri-dosh and bring the household the ancestresses' ashirwad of sukh and santaan. Families invite suhagins or elderly women for bhojan alongside brahmins, since the offering is to the feminine line itself.

Puja Vidhi (How to Observe)

After morning snan, the karta performs sankalp naming the departed mothers and grandmothers, then offers tarpan of water, til, and kusha facing south. Pind-daan of rice, til, and ghee is made in their name. Food cooked without onion-garlic — commonly kheer, puri, and seasonal sabzi — is first offered to crow, cow, and dog (the panch-bali), then served to invited brahmins and elderly women, who are seen off with dakshina and vastra. Daan of white cloth in the ancestresses' name completes the rite.
