Significance
One of the most auspicious days in the Hindu calendar — the entire day is a Shubh Muhurat, so no muhurat check is needed before beginning an important work. Treta Yuga is said to have begun on this day. Sudama visited Krishna with a handful of poha and returned to find his poverty transformed into abundance. The Ganges descended to Earth. Sage Vyasa began narrating the Mahabharata to Lord Ganesha, and Draupadi received the Akshaya Patra, the vessel of never-ending food. Buying gold is a symbolic act of inviting Lakshmi's never-diminishing prosperity into the home; equally traditional is daan — giving water, food, and shade in the summer heat — which the shastras regard as the highest form of akshaya merit.
Puja Vidhi (How to Observe)
Wake early and take a holy bath. Perform Lakshmi-Vishnu puja together with tulsi leaves, chandan, and yellow flowers, and chant the Vishnu Sahasranama or "Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya". Buy gold, silver, or another lasting asset — or begin a new venture — as a symbolic act of inviting undiminishing prosperity. Donate generously — water pots, fans, umbrellas, footwear, grain, and clothes are the traditional summer daan items. Feed the poor. Any good deed done today yields infinite (akshaya) merit, so devotees also begin japa practices, savings, and long-term sankalps on this day.
