Hindu Calendar/Anant Chaturdashi

Anant Chaturdashi (अनंत चतुर्दशी) is a festival falling in the Hindu lunar month of भाद्रपद. Its position is fixed by tithi rather than by the Gregorian calendar, so the date moves every year and is computed from the panchang. Tradition keeps a fast on the day. The observance itself, and its puja vidhi, stay the same each year.

Each year this observance falls on the Chaturdashi tithi of the Shukla Paksha in the Hindu month of Bhadrapada. Because lunar tithis drift against the Gregorian calendar, the English date shifts every year — the tithi rule above is what stays fixed.

About This Festival

The fourteenth of Bhadrapada's bright fortnight — Vishnu is worshipped as Anant, the endless one, the fourteen-knot anant sutra is tied on the arm, and Ganesh visarjan processions carry Bappa to the water on the same afternoon.

Significance

The vrat of Anant — Vishnu resting on Shesha in the kshir sagar — is kept for fourteen years by tradition, restoring lost prosperity as it did for Kaundinya in the katha Krishna told Yudhishthira during the Pandavas' exile. The fourteen knots of the anant sutra stand for the fourteen lokas Vishnu pervades; the raksha thread is worn through the year. Since public Ganeshotsav concluded on this day, the visarjan crowds have made it one of Maharashtra's largest festival afternoons — 'Ganpati Bappa Morya, pudhchya varshi laukar ya' echoing to the water.

Puja Vidhi (How to Observe)

After morning snan, set a kalash with a darbha-grass Shesha form or Vishnu image. Worship Anant Bhagwan with panchopachar, offer the fourteen-knot cotton or silk anant sutra — kesari for men, red for women — and hear the Anant vrat katha of Kaundinya. Tie the sutra on the right arm (men) or left (women). The vrat meal is single and sattvik, traditionally with the fourteen-grain preparation where family custom keeps it. Households with a sthapit Ganesh murti perform the uttar-puja and take Bappa for visarjan in the afternoon.
