Shadbala — The Sixfold Planetary Strength System in Vedic Astrology

Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra describes six sources of planetary strength. The calculator above gives an honest preview from the four factors currently implemented by the engine, while this guide explains where Kala and Drik Bala fit in the complete framework.

The Six Sources of Shadbala (BPHS Ch.27–39)

1. Sthana Bala — Positional Strength

Strength from the sign occupied. Exaltation gives the highest Sthana Bala; own sign (swakshetra) is second; moolatrikona range is elevated within the sign. Friend's sign, neutral, and enemy sign give progressively less. Debilitation subtracts strength. BPHS Chapter 27.

2. Dig Bala — Directional Strength

Each planet has a house where it reaches full directional strength and an opposite house where strength is zero. Jupiter and Mercury thrive in the 1st; Sun and Mars in the 10th; Moon and Venus in the 4th; Saturn in the 7th. BPHS Chapter 28.

3. Kala Bala — Temporal Strength

Time-based strength: day vs night, lunar paksha (waxing/waning), day of week, and ayana (northern/southern solstice half). Some planets are stronger by day, others by night. The Ishvaram engine currently computes 0.0 for this source pending full implementation. BPHS Chapters 29–32.

4. Chesta Bala — Motional Strength

Strength from the planet's motion state. Retrograde planets make extra "effort" and receive elevated Chesta Bala. Combust planets (too close to Sun) lose Chesta strength. Fast direct motion is stronger than slow. The Sun and Moon have nominal Chesta values. BPHS Chapter 30.

5. Naisargika Bala — Natural Strength

Fixed inherent strength that never changes: Sun (60), Moon (51), Venus (42), Jupiter (34), Mercury (25), Mars (17), Saturn (8). Reflects each planet's cosmic luminosity. Rahu and Ketu have no Naisargika Bala in classical reckoning. BPHS Chapter 33.

6. Drik Bala — Aspectual Strength

Strength or weakness added by aspects from other planets. Benefic aspects strengthen; malefic aspects weaken. Vedic aspects have graded intensities — Saturn and Mars each have stronger partial aspects than their 7th house aspect. The engine returns 0.0 for this source pending aspectual computation. BPHS Chapter 34.

Why a Four-Factor Score Is Not a Diagnosis

Sthana, Dig, Chesta and Naisargika Bala reveal useful differences that a sign-only reading misses. But a normalized score from those four factors cannot by itself explain career, marriage, money or health outcomes.

A responsible interpretation also needs Kala and Drik Bala, the houses a planet owns and occupies, its aspects, active dasha and relevant divisional charts. Exact birth time and the timezone resolved from the selected city are therefore required for this preview.

Use the table to decide which graha needs deeper chart review. Do not treat its highest or lowest score as proof of a life blockage, and do not choose a gemstone or remedy from this preview alone.

How to Read the Four-Factor Preview Score

70–100

Strong

Higher relative score across the four implemented components. Review full-chart context.

40–69

Moderate

Middle relative score in this preview. It is not a prediction of effort or outcome.

0–39

Weak

Lower relative score across four factors. Investigate before drawing a conclusion or choosing an upay.

How the Ishvaram Shadbala Engine Works

The engine uses Swiss Ephemeris (sidereal zodiac, Lahiri ayanamsa) to compute each planet's exact longitude, house position, speed, retrograde status, and combustion state for the supplied birth details. These values feed directly into the four implemented Shadbala components — Sthana Bala, Dig Bala, Chesta Bala, and Naisargika Bala. Raw scores are normalized to a 0–100 scale. Kala Bala and Drik Bala are shown as 0.0 with a note; the total score reflects only 4 of 6 sources and is labelled as a preview throughout this page.

The reference text is Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, Chapters 27 through 39. BPHS defines the exact scoring rules for each Sthana Bala sub-source (Uchcha Bala, Saptavarga Bala, Ojhayugmarasyamsa Bala, Kendradi Bala, Drekkana Bala), the Dig Bala formula, the six Kala Bala sub-components, and the Chesta Bala vakra categories. Until all six components are calibrated, the implemented subset is useful for comparison but not a standalone diagnosis.

Frequently Asked Questions — Shadbala

What is Shadbala?

Shadbala (षड्बल, literally 'sixfold strength') is the classical Vedic framework for comparing six sources of planetary strength: Sthana, Dig, Kala, Chesta, Naisargika and Drik Bala. The calculator on this page is explicitly a four-factor preview; it does not present the unimplemented Kala and Drik components as a full classical score.

What is Sthana Bala (positional strength)?

Sthana Bala (स्थान बल) measures a planet's strength based on the sign it occupies. An exalted planet receives the highest positional strength. A planet in its own sign (swakshetra), moolatrikona range, friend's sign, neutral sign, or debilitation sign each receive progressively lower Sthana Bala. This is the most commonly referenced strength indicator in chart reading — when an astrologer says 'Sun is strong because it is exalted in Aries,' they are describing high Sthana Bala.

What is Dig Bala (directional strength)?

Dig Bala (दिग् बल) measures whether a planet is placed in the part of the chart where its energy acts with confidence. In practice, it explains why two planets with similar sign dignity can behave differently: one may be directionally supported and visible, while another works against the chart's natural orientation. Use Dig Bala as a strength modifier when judging authority, initiative, relationships, and public action.

What is Chesta Bala (motional strength)?

Chesta Bala (चेष्टा बल) captures the planet's motion state. In Vedic astrology, retrograde planets are considered to be making extra effort — they receive elevated Chesta Bala (+15 points in the simplified engine). A combust planet (too close to the Sun) is weakened and receives negative Chesta adjustment. Fast direct planets receive moderate strength; slow direct planets receive less. The Sun and Moon, which never retrograde, receive a nominal Chesta Bala value. BPHS Chapter 30 defines the full vakra/anuvakra/vikala motion categories.

What is Naisargika Bala (natural strength)?

Naisargika Bala (नैसर्गिक बल) is the planet's built-in baseline before house placement, aspects, motion, or birth timing are considered. It keeps the Shadbala total anchored to the natural hierarchy described by BPHS, so the reading does not treat every graha as starting from the same power level. After this baseline is set, the other Bala components show how the individual kundali raises or reduces that promise.

What is Kala Bala (temporal strength)?

Kala Bala (काल बल) adds the condition of the birth moment to planetary strength. It asks whether the graha is supported by the clock, calendar, lunar condition, and seasonal half active at birth. Because this component has multiple classical sub-calculations, Ishvaram keeps the displayed value at 0.0 until the full BPHS method is implemented instead of showing a partial temporal score as final.

What is Drik Bala (aspectual strength)?

Drik Bala (दृक् बल) measures strength gained or lost through aspects from other planets. A benefic planet aspecting another strengthens it; a malefic aspect weakens it. Unlike Western astrology's simple aspect list, Vedic aspects follow graded strength rules — Saturn's 3rd and 10th house aspects have different intensities than its 7th house aspect. Computing Drik Bala requires knowing every planet's exact aspect angle, intensity, and benefic/malefic nature. The Ishvaram engine returns 0.0 for Drik Bala pending full aspectual implementation.

How do I use Shadbala to identify upay (remedies)?

Do not choose an upay from a strength score alone. Use the preview to see which computed factors deserve a closer look, then judge the planet with its houses, aspects, dasha, divisional charts and the two remaining Bala components. A chart-specific report can add that context before suggesting an upay.
