All Pradosh dates are computed from real planetary positions using the Swiss Ephemeris engine with Lahiri Ayanamsa — Trayodashi tithi boundary, not a fixed calendar.
What is Pradosh Vrat?
Pradosh Vrat (प्रदोष व्रत) is observed on the Trayodashi tithi — the 13th day — of both the Shukla paksha (waxing fortnight) and the Krishna paksha (waning fortnight) each lunar month. This gives approximately 24-26 Pradosh Vrats in a year. The word "pradosh" means the twilight period — the 1.5-hour window around sunset — and it is during this pradosh kaal that Lord Shiva is said to perform his Tandava dance and grant boons most freely. Worshipping Shiva at this moment is the heart of the vrat.
Unlike most fasts that centre on a specific paksha or month, Pradosh Vrat is repeated twice every lunar month — once in each fortnight — making it one of the most consistent Shaiva observances in the Vedic calendar. The date can never be picked from a fixed English calendar; it is determined by the exact moment the Moon's elongation from the Sun reaches 144° (Shukla Trayodashi) or 324° (Krishna Trayodashi) — which is why every date in the table above is computed from real planetary positions using the Swiss Ephemeris engine.
Som, Bhaum and Shani Pradosh — the weekday significance
When Pradosh Vrat falls on a particular weekday, it takes on that planet's character and yields an additional boon beyond the general Shiva blessing. The three most celebrated are:
- Som Pradosh (Somvaar / Monday)Somvaar is Shiva's own day — the Moon (Soma) is Shiva's crown. A Pradosh on Monday is supremely auspicious for moksha, maansik shanti, removal of mental anxiety, and blessings in family life.
- Bhaum Pradosh (Mangalvaar / Tuesday)Mangal (Mars) rules debt, land and courage. Pradosh on Tuesday is the traditional remedy for karz-mukti (freedom from debt), bhumi-related disputes, Mangal dosha, and delayed marriage.
- Shani Pradosh (Shanivar / Saturday)Shani Pradosh is the most potent of all — Shiva is the deity who controls Saturn's malefic effects. Worshipping Shiva on a Saturday Pradosh directly mitigates Sade Sati, Dhayya and Shani mahadasha difficulties. Offer a nilkantha (blue-throat) abhishek and mustard-oil diya for the full effect.
All weekday Pradosh dates are listed in the table above — the weekday name in each entry is derived from the engine-computed date, never added by hand.
What to do on Pradosh Vrat
Keep the fast from sunrise, bathe in the evening, and reach the Shiv mandir during pradosh kaal — the window around sunset. Perform Panchamrit abhishek (Ganga jal, milk, honey, curd, ghee), offer bel patra in threes, chant "Om Namah Shivaya" 108 times, light a ghee diya and conclude with aarti. Break the fast only after the pradosh kaal ends, with saatvik food — fruits, sendha namak, sabudana. Grains, onion, garlic and tamasic food are avoided all day.
On Shani Pradosh, also offer mustard-oil diya and nilkantha (water mixed with blue flowers) abhishek. On Som Pradosh, pair the fast with a Rudrabhishek if possible. For the exact pradosh kaal timing in your city — which varies with the local sunset — use the daily Panchang.
Pradosh Vrat puja vidhi
- Observe upvaas from sunrise. Begin the fast at sunrise. Drink only water, milk or fruit juice through the day. The fast is for Mahadeva — keep the mind calm, avoid anger and negative speech throughout the day.
- Bathe and prepare in the evening. Around an hour before sunset, take a bath and wear clean clothes. Arrange the puja items — Ganga jal, milk, honey, curd, bel patra (bilva leaves), flowers, dhoop, diya and incense — all offered to Lord Shiva.
- Visit the Shiva temple at pradosh kaal. Go to a Shiv mandir in the pradosh kaal — the window from approximately 1.5 hours before sunset to 1.5 hours after. This is the most auspicious time for Lord Shiva's blessings. If unable to visit a temple, worship at a Shiv linga at home.
- Perform Shiva abhishek. Offer Panchamrit abhishek to the Shiv linga — Ganga jal, milk, honey, curd and ghee, each offered separately while chanting 'Om Namah Shivaya'. Offer bel patra in sets of three, saying 'Om Namah Shivaya' with each set.
- Light a diya and chant. Light a ghee diya and offer it to Shiva. Chant the Shiv Panchakshara 'Om Namah Shivaya' 108 times, or recite the Shiv Chalisa or Pradosh Katha. The continuous chant during pradosh kaal multiplies the merit.
- Offer aarti and break the fast. Conclude with Shiva aarti and prasad distribution. Break the fast after pradosh kaal ends (after sunset) with saatvik food — fruits, milk, sabudana or sendha namak dishes. Grains and tamasic food are avoided for the full day.
Upay for Shani dosha and Sade Sati on Pradosh
When Saturn sits heavily in your chart — Sade Sati pressing on your Moon sign, Dhayya restricting movement, or Shani in the 12th, 1st or 2nd house from the natal Moon — Pradosh Vrat is the classical remedy. Worshipping Shiva on Shani Pradosh is said to invoke the god who governs Saturn himself. The upay: fast from sunrise, offer mustard-oil diya at the Shiv linga during pradosh kaal, pour Ganga jal and black sesame in the abhishek, and chant the Shiva Panchakshara 108 times while asking for relief.
Whether Shani is the root cause of a persistent pattern in your life — delayed career, blocked marriage, financial ceiling — depends on your chart. Frequently Asked Questions
Pradosh Vrat kab aata hai?
Pradosh Vrat Trayodashi tithi (13th tithi) ko aata hai — har lunar month mein do baar, ek Shukla paksha (waxing moon) mein aur ek Krishna paksha (waning moon) mein. Iska matlab hai sal mein lagbhag 24-26 Pradosh Vrat hote hain. Pradosh ka vishesh samay suryast se pehle aur baad ka lagbhag dedh ghanta hota hai — ise pradosh kaal kehte hain — jab Shiv puja sabse phal-dayi mani jaati hai. Upar di gayi table mein har Trayodashi ki exact date Swiss Ephemeris engine se compute ki gayi hai.
Pradosh Vrat mein kya karna chahiye?
Pradosh Vrat mein suryodaya se upvaas shuru karein, sham ko snan karein, aur pradosh kaal mein (suryast se lagbhag dedh ghanta pehle) Shiv mandir jaayein. Shiv linga par Ganga jal, dudh, shahad, dahi aur bel patra chadhayein. Shiv Panchakshara mantra 'Om Namah Shivaya' ka jaap karein. Pradosh Katha sunein ya padhein. Diya jalayein, dhoop karein aur Shiv aarti karein. Shaam ko phal, dudh ya sendha namak ke saath saatvik bhojan se vrat todein.
Som Pradosh aur Bhaum Pradosh mein kya antar hai?
Jab Pradosh Vrat Somvaar (Monday) ko padta hai toh use Som Pradosh kehte hain — yeh moksha aur maansik shanti ke liye vishesh phal-dayi maana jaata hai kyunki Somvaar Shiv ka hi din hai. Jab Pradosh Mangalvaar (Tuesday) ko padta hai toh use Bhaum Pradosh kehte hain — yeh karz-mukti (rin se mukti), bhumi sambandhi samasya aur Mangal dosha ke upay ke liye shreshtha hai. Dono din Shiv ki aradhana hoti hai, par vrat ka phala alag-alag hota hai.
Shani Pradosh ka mahatva kya hai?
Shani Pradosh tab hota hai jab Trayodashi tithi Shanivar (Saturday) ko padti hai — yeh Pradosh ka sabse shubh roop maana jaata hai. Shani Pradosh par Shiv linga par tel aur nilkantha abhishek karna vishesh phal-dayi hota hai.
Pradosh vrat mein kya nahi khana chahiye?
Pradosh Vrat mein anaaj (gehu, chawal, dal), rajma, chana, maida aur non-vegetarian bhojan bilkul nahi khaana chahiye. Pyaz, lehsun aur tamasic khana bhi varjit hai. Anumit bhojan mein phal, dudh, dahi, sabudana, singhade ka aata, aaloo, kuttu, sendha namak aur dry fruits aate hain. Vrat todne ka samay pradosh kaal ke baad — yani suryast ke baad — hota hai.
