What is Rashi in Vedic Astrology?
In Vedic astrology (Jyotish Shastra), your Rashi or Moon sign is determined by the zodiac sign in which the Moon was positioned at the time of your birth. Unlike Western astrology which focuses on the Sun sign, Vedic astrology considers the Moon sign as the primary indicator of your emotional nature, mind, and personality.
The Moon moves through all 12 rashis approximately every 27.3 days, spending about 2.25 days in each sign. This is why knowing your exact birth time helps calculate a more accurate rashi.
The 12 rashis are: Mesh (Aries), Vrishabh (Taurus), Mithun (Gemini), Kark (Cancer), Singh (Leo), Kanya (Virgo), Tula (Libra), Vrishchik (Scorpio), Dhanu (Sagittarius), Makar (Capricorn), Kumbh (Aquarius), and Meen (Pisces).

AI Kundali Analysis
Why does this pattern keep repeating in your life?
Your kundali names the house, planet, and dasha behind it. Then it gives the upay you can actually follow.
Ask your chart: Which pattern in my kundali is affecting me the most?
What your kundali report will show
- Which house and planet explain the pattern you keep seeing.
- How your active dasha changes the timing of career, marriage, and money.
- Which upay fits your chart before you guess or overspend.
What is Rashi (राशि) in Vedic Astrology?
In Vedic astrology (Jyotish Shastra), your Rashi— also called Chandra Rashi or Moon sign — is the zodiac sign where the Moon was positioned at the time of your birth. Unlike Western astrology, which emphasises the Sun sign, Vedic tradition gives primary importance to the Moon because it governs the mind (Manas), emotions, and your instinctive nature. Your Rashi shapes how you feel, react, and connect with others at the deepest level.
There are 12 Rashis in the Vedic sidereal zodiac, each spanning 30 degrees of the ecliptic: Mesha (मेष / Aries), Vrishabha (वृषभ / Taurus), Mithuna (मिथुन / Gemini), Karka (कर्क / Cancer), Simha (सिंह / Leo), Kanya (कन्या / Virgo), Tula (तुला / Libra), Vrishchika (वृश्चिक / Scorpio), Dhanu (धनु / Sagittarius), Makara (मकर / Capricorn), Kumbha (कुम्भ / Aquarius), and Meena (मीन / Pisces). Each Rashi has a ruling planet (Graha), an element (Tattva), and a quality (Guna) that together define its character.
A critical distinction: Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, which accounts for the precession of equinoxes through Ayanamsa correction. This means your Vedic Moon sign may differ from your Western zodiac sign by roughly one sign. The Lahiri Ayanamsa — officially adopted by the Indian government — is the standard correction used in our calculator.
Your Rashi is the starting point for reading your daily Rashifal (horoscope), understanding personality, checking compatibility for marriage (Kundli Milan), and timing important life decisions through Dasha and transit (Gochar) analysis. It is also used to determine your Rashi Lord — the planet that governs your emotional world and whose strength in your chart influences overall wellbeing.
How Moon Sign is Calculated
To find your Rashi, we calculate the Moon's exact sidereal longitude at your birth moment. The Swiss Ephemeris computes the Moon's tropical (Western) position with arc-second precision, and then the Lahiri Ayanamsa value for your birth year is subtracted to convert it to the sidereal zodiac used in Vedic astrology. The resulting longitude falls into one of the twelve 30-degree Rashi segments.
The Moon moves through each Rashi in approximately 2.25 days (about 13 degrees per day), which is why the birth date alone is usually sufficient to determine your Moon sign — birth time refines it when the Moon is near the boundary (Rashi Sandhi) between two signs. Our calculator automatically handles this precision, flagging borderline cases where birth time matters.
Why does the Moon sign matter more in Vedic astrology? Classical texts like Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra emphasise that the Moon reflects your Manas (mind), which is the seat of perception, memory, and emotional response. While the Lagna (Ascendant) shows your outward personality and the Sun sign reflects your Atma (soul), the Moon sign reveals how you experience life from within — making it the most personal and practically useful reference point in daily Jyotish.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between Rashi and Zodiac sign?
When people say "zodiac sign" in casual conversation, they usually mean the Western Sun sign based on the tropical zodiac. "Rashi" in Vedic astrology refers to the Moon sign based on the sidereal zodiac. The sidereal system accounts for the precession of equinoxes (roughly 24 degrees of drift), so your Vedic Rashi is often one sign behind your Western sign. For example, someone born as a "Taurus" in Western astrology might be Mesha (Aries) Rashi in Vedic astrology.
Why is Moon sign more important than Sun sign in Vedic astrology?
Vedic tradition views the Moon as the karaka (significator) of the mind. Since your mental and emotional state governs how you experience every aspect of life — relationships, decisions, reactions — the Moon sign is considered the most practical indicator for daily predictions (Rashifal), compatibility matching, and Muhurta (auspicious timing). The Sun sign represents the soul (Atma) and is important too, but the Moon sign is what you "live through" day to day.
How is Rashi calculated from date of birth?
The Moon's position in the sky is computed using astronomical ephemeris data for your birth date, time, and location. The tropical longitude is then adjusted by the Lahiri Ayanamsa to get the sidereal longitude. This sidereal longitude is divided by 30 to determine which of the 12 Rashis the Moon occupies. Since the Moon moves about 13 degrees per day, date of birth alone is usually enough — but if the Moon is near a Rashi boundary, birth time becomes important for accuracy.
Can my Rashi change over time?
No. Your Janam Rashi (birth Moon sign) is fixed — it is determined by the Moon's position at the moment you were born and never changes. However, the Moon transits through all 12 Rashis every month (spending about 2.25 days in each), and these transits (called Gochar or Chandra Gochar) create daily and weekly shifts in your emotional and mental state. Your daily Rashifal is based on these transits relative to your fixed birth Rashi.
What is Lagna Rashi vs Chandra Rashi?
Chandra Rashi (Moon sign) is the zodiac sign where the Moon was placed at your birth — it reflects your mind, emotions, and inner nature. Lagna Rashi (Ascendant sign) is the zodiac sign rising on the eastern horizon at your birth moment — it defines your outward personality, physical appearance, and the structure of your 12 houses. Chandra Rashi requires only birth date, while Lagna Rashi requires exact birth time since the Ascendant changes approximately every two hours.
