What is Pitra Dosh (पितृ दोष)?
Pitra Dosh— also written as Pitru Dosh or Pitra Dosha — is one of the most significant karmic conditions in Vedic astrology. It represents ancestral debt (pitru rin) that has been passed down through the family lineage. When Sun (Surya) is afflicted by shadow planets Rahu or Ketu, or when the 9th house (the house of ancestors, dharma, and father) is heavily influenced by malefics, Pitra Dosh is considered present in the birth chart (kundali).
The word “Pitra” (Sanskrit: पितृ) means ancestors or fathers. “Dosh” means an imbalance or debt. Together, Pitra Dosh describes a karmic imprint from ancestors who may have had unfulfilled desires, unpaid debts, or whose last rites were not properly performed. This imprint passes through the family until it is consciously acknowledged and resolved through the prescribed Vedic remedies.
The Sun in Vedic astrology represents the father, authority, soul, and ancestors. When the Sun is conjunct Rahu or Ketu (the shadow planets that deal with karma and past-life influences), or when it sits in the 9th house alongside a malefic, the ancestral karmic thread becomes active in this life. Similarly, Saturn conjunct the Sun introduces a quality of burden and delayed resolution — Saturn is the planet of karma and duty, and its influence on the Sun suggests heavy ancestral lessons to be worked through.
According to classical Vedic astrology texts including Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, the 9th house governs dharma, father, and ancestors. Any malefic planet (Rahu, Ketu, Saturn, Mars) occupying this house, or afflicting the 9th lord, weakens the ancestral connection and creates the conditions for Pitra Dosh to manifest.
How Pitra Dosh is Detected by Our Calculator
Our calculator checks six astrological signatures for Pitra Dosh, based on classical Parashari Vedic astrology rules:
- 1.Sun conjunct Rahu — the most potent Pitra Dosh indicator. Rahu (North Node) eclipse-conjunct with the Sun creates a solar eclipse-like energy in the chart, obscuring the ancestral light.
- 2.Sun conjunct Ketu — Ketu (South Node) represents past-life karma. Sun–Ketu conjunction indicates deep ancestral patterns carried from previous lives into the present.
- 3.Sun conjunct Saturn — Saturn represents karmic duty and delays. The Saturn–Sun conjunction creates a heavy ancestral burden that requires conscious effort to resolve.
- 4.Sun in the 9th house with a node — when the Sun occupies the 9th house (house of ancestors and dharma) alongside Rahu or Ketu, the ancestral karmic debt is deeply embedded in the dharmic life path.
- 5.Malefic in the 9th house — Rahu, Ketu, Saturn, or Mars occupying the 9th house directly afflicts the house of ancestors, irrespective of where the Sun is.
- 6.9th lord afflicted by a malefic — even if the 9th house is empty, if its ruling lord planet is conjuncted or aspected by Rahu, Ketu, Saturn, or Mars, the 9th house significations are weakened.

Frequently Asked Questions — अक्सर पूछे जाने वाले सवाल
What is Pitra Dosh?
Pitra Dosh (पितृ दोष) is an astrological condition in Vedic astrology that represents unresolved ancestral karma — debts or unfulfilled duties from past generations. In a birth chart it is detected when the Sun is afflicted by Rahu, Ketu, or Saturn (by conjunction or placement), or when the 9th house (the house of ancestors, dharma, and father) carries malefic influence. A person with Pitra Dosh may experience patterns of repeated obstacles, health challenges in the family, or difficulties in relationships that seem disproportionate to their own actions.
How is Pitra Dosh detected in a birth chart?
Vedic astrology identifies Pitra Dosh through six key signatures: (1) Sun conjunct Rahu in the same house — the most potent indicator; (2) Sun conjunct Ketu; (3) Sun conjunct Saturn; (4) Sun placed in the 9th house along with Rahu or Ketu; (5) any classical malefic (Rahu, Ketu, Saturn, or Mars) occupying the 9th house; (6) the 9th house lord being conjuncted or aspected by a malefic planet. Our calculator checks all six conditions using Swiss Ephemeris data from your birth details.
What are the symptoms and effects of Pitra Dosh?
Traditional Jyotish texts associate Pitra Dosh with several recurring patterns: difficulty conceiving or raising children, obstacles in career or finances that appear despite sincere effort, frequent illness or early death among male family members, strained relationships with the father or paternal family, feeling blocked or stuck in life despite strong effort, and unexplained recurring accidents or setbacks. These effects are believed to stem from unresolved duties of ancestors — not as punishment, but as karmic imprints that require conscious resolution.
What are the remedies (upay) for Pitra Dosh?
The primary Vedic remedies for Pitra Dosh are: Pitra Tarpan — performing water offerings (tarpan) to ancestors during Pitru Paksha (the fortnight dedicated to ancestors in Bhadrapada month); Shraddh rituals on the death anniversary of paternal ancestors; donating food to Brahmins on new moon (Amavasya) days; visiting Gaya in Bihar and performing Pind Daan; chanting the Gayatri Mantra (108 times daily) to strengthen the Sun; worshipping Lord Vishnu or Lord Ganesha; and keeping an energised Ganesha idol at home, which is traditionally associated with removing ancestral obstacles. For Sun–Rahu or Sun–Ketu conjunction specifically, wearing a Ruby (Manik) after consulting a Jyotishi is also recommended.
Is Pitra Dosh the same as Pitru Paksha observances?
Pitra Dosh is an astrological condition in the birth chart, while Pitru Paksha is the annual 16-day period when all Hindus are encouraged to perform ancestral rites — regardless of whether they have Pitra Dosh in their chart. However, for those with Pitra Dosh, Pitru Paksha is considered especially important. Performing tarpan and shraddh during this period is believed to be the most direct remedy for the ancestral karmic debt indicated by Pitra Dosh. The two are complementary: Pitru Paksha is a universal practice; Pitra Dosh is an individual chart-specific condition.
Can Pitra Dosh be fully removed?
Vedic tradition holds that Pitra Dosh is a karmic debt rather than a permanent curse. It can be significantly reduced through sincere performance of the prescribed remedies — particularly regular tarpan, Pitru Paksha shraddh, feeding Brahmins, and donating in the name of ancestors. The Dosh is not removed instantly; it lightens progressively as the remedies are performed with genuine intent. Many Jyotishis also note that simply becoming aware of the ancestral debt and performing even one proper Pind Daan at Gaya creates a measurable shift. The goal is resolution, not removal — acknowledging and honouring the ancestors so the karmic pattern no longer repeats.
My father passed away — does that cause Pitra Dosh?
No — Pitra Dosh is not caused by the death of a parent. It is a natal chart condition: either it is present in your chart at birth or it is not. The death of a father or grandfather does not create Pitra Dosh retroactively. However, if a parent dies without receiving proper last rites (antim sanskar), or if a person has knowingly or unknowingly failed to perform sraddh rituals for deceased ancestors, traditional texts do consider this a contributing factor to ancestral karma accumulating over time. In such cases, performing belated tarpan and shraddh is recommended.
